From Photo to Keepsake: How to Turn Everyday Moments into Modern Gifts

Your phone is full of photos — thousands of them.
But only a few truly matter.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to choose and prepare a photo so it becomes a modern keepsake: an acrylic lamp, a memory plaque or a keychain that actually gets used and loved.

1. Choose one clear emotion

Instead of scrolling for an hour, ask yourself one question:

“Which moment do I wish I could freeze for them?”

That might be:

• the first day with their newborn

• a silly selfie that sums up your friendship

• a picture with a pet that is no longer here

• a quiet, candid moment on a holiday

Don’t worry about perfect hair or outfits.
Emotion always wins over perfection.

2. Look for light and contrast

For engraving, we don’t need a studio photo, but we do need a certain level of clarity:

• Faces should be visible (not tiny in the distance).

• There should be contrast between the subject and the background.

• Very dark, blurry night photos usually don’t work well.

If you’re unsure between two images, pick the one where eyes and smiles are easiest to see when you zoom out.

3. Keep the text short and honest

Most AtaNova pieces work best with 1–2 short lines:

• a name + date

• a location

• a tiny message like “You are home”, “Always in my heart” or “Our little galaxy”.

Short text:

• keeps the design minimal and elegant

• reads easily from across the room

• doesn’t fight with the photo for attention.

If you have a longer message, we can always add it to the backside of a plaque or into the product card, and keep the front clean.

4. Match the moment to the product

Different memories shine in different formats:

• Acrylic lamps — perfect for baby births, anniversaries and moments you want to see every evening.

• Memory plaques — great for wedding photos, family portraits, “before & after” journeys.

• Keychains & pet tags — everyday reminders; small but constantly with the person or pet.

Think about where you want the memory to live:
on a desk, on a shelf, by the bed or in their pocket.

5. Less editing, more authenticity

You don’t need heavy filters.
A simple, slightly brightened version of the original photo is often best.

We will still adjust the file for engraving in our Antwerp atelier, so you can safely upload:

• the original colour photo

• or a clean black-and-white version.

The important part is that the moment feels real. That’s what you’ll want to remember in five or ten years.
