How to Choose a Pet Photo for Line-Art Engraving
The short answer
The best pet photo for line-art engraving is sharp, evenly lit, taken at your pet's eye level, and shows a clear outline of the head and shoulders against a quiet background.
You do not need a professional camera. A recent phone photo taken near a window will almost always beat an old, dark snapshot. What matters is not resolution alone — it is separation: can the eye instantly tell where your pet ends and the background begins?
That single question decides whether a photo becomes clean line art or a muddy sketch.
What line-art engraving actually does to a photo
Line art is not a printed copy of your photo. It is a reduction. The image is stripped down to its essential contours — the curve of an ear, the line of a muzzle, the shape of the eyes — and those lines are then laser-engraved into clear acrylic.
This is why a photo that looks lovely on a phone screen can fail as line art. Colour, blur and background clutter carry a lot of information on a screen. Once colour is removed and only lines remain, that information disappears. What is left has to stand on its own.
Two things survive the reduction well:
- Edges — where light meets dark
- Shape — the recognisable silhouette of your pet
Two things do not survive at all:
- Colour — a ginger cat and a grey cat produce the same lines
- Fine texture — individual fur strands become noise, not detail
Once you understand that, choosing the right photo becomes obvious.
The six things that make a pet photo work
1. Sharp focus on the eyes
The eyes are the anchor of any pet portrait. If they are soft or motion-blurred, the finished piece will feel lifeless no matter how good the rest of the photo is. Zoom in on your phone and check the eyes before anything else.
2. Even, natural light
Daylight from a window is the single easiest upgrade you can make. It wraps around the face and creates gentle edges. Avoid direct flash — it flattens the face and burns out the highlights that create contour.
3. Eye-level angle
Photos taken from human standing height look down at the pet and compress the head. Crouch down. A photo taken at your pet's eye level immediately reads as a portrait rather than a snapshot.
4. A quiet background
A plain wall, a sofa, a lawn, a blanket. Anything without competing lines. Bookshelves, patterned rugs, fences and radiators all generate lines of their own, and line art cannot tell the difference between your dog's ear and the edge of a cushion.
5. Contrast between pet and background
A black dog on a dark sofa has almost no edge to trace. A white cat on a white duvet has the same problem in reverse. Look for separation: dark pet against a lighter surface, or a light pet against something darker.
6. Head and shoulders, filling the frame
The closer your pet is in the frame, the more contour survives the reduction. A full-body shot taken from across the room loses almost everything in the face — which is usually the part that matters most.
Photos to avoid if you can
- Very dark photos — there are no edges to find
- Blurry or low-resolution images — including screenshots and heavily compressed social media downloads
- Busy backgrounds — furniture, patterns, foliage, other people
- Photos where the pet is far away — the face becomes a few pixels
- Heavy filters — they crush the contrast that line art depends on
- Pets in shadow — half a face lit, half in darkness, produces half a portrait

Notes by pet type
Dogs
Long-snouted breeds (greyhounds, collies, dachshunds) translate beautifully into line art because their profile is distinctive. Flat-faced breeds (pugs, bulldogs, Persians) rely more on the eyes and wrinkles, so focus and lighting matter more. Get down low and shoot slightly from the side rather than straight on — a three-quarter angle gives the strongest outline.
Cats
Cats have strong natural silhouettes: ears, cheek line, whiskers. A cat sitting upright against a plain wall is close to ideal. Long-haired cats can lose their outline against soft furnishings — move them to a cleaner surface if you can.
Small pets
Rabbits, guinea pigs, birds and reptiles all work, but they are small, so get close. A photo taken from 30 cm away with the pet filling the frame will always beat a wide shot of a cage or hutch.
Two pets together
Two subjects is the practical limit for a clean result. They should be at a similar distance from the camera and not overlapping heavily — otherwise the two outlines merge into one shape.
How to take a better photo in five minutes
- Go to the brightest window in your home. Turn off the flash.
- Put your pet side-on to the window, not with their back to it. Backlighting turns them into a silhouette.
- Crouch down to their eye level. Sit on the floor if you need to.
- Get close — head and shoulders should fill most of the frame.
- Tap the eyes on your screen to set focus, then take ten photos, not one.
- Zoom in afterwards and pick the sharpest. Whiskers should be crisp, not smeared.
A treat or a squeaky toy held just above the camera lens will get the ears up and the eyes forward. That one trick fixes more photos than anything else on this list.

A note on memorial pieces
Many pet portraits are ordered after a pet has died. If that is your situation, you may not have the luxury of taking a new photo — you have what you have.
Send it. Even if it is imperfect. A slightly soft photo of a pet you loved is worth more than a technically perfect photo of one you did not. We will tell you honestly what can be done with it, and if a short engraved name or date would help the piece feel complete, you can add that too.
Frequently asked questions
Does the photo need to be high resolution?
It helps, but sharpness matters more than megapixels. A well-lit, in-focus photo from a modern phone is more useful than a large but blurry file.
Can I send a photo taken from Instagram or WhatsApp?
You can, but these platforms compress images heavily. If you still have the original file on your phone, send that instead — it will engrave better.
Can you remove a collar, lead or background object?
Small adjustments to the line art can usually be made. Mention what you would like changed when ordering, and check the Design Proof before approving.
Can I include a name or date?
Yes. A short engraved text — a name, a date, or a brief line — can be added if you select that option. Keep it short; long text competes with the artwork.
Can two pets be engraved on one piece?
Yes, if they appear together in the same photo, at a similar distance from the camera, without heavy overlap. Two separate photos cannot be merged into one composition.
What if my photo is not good enough?
We contact you before production and explain why, so you can send a different image if you have one. Nothing is engraved without your approval.
Will the finished piece look exactly like the Design Proof?
The engraved line art follows the approved Design Proof. Natural wood grain and colour vary from piece to piece, so the base may differ slightly from a digital preview.
How long does it take to arrive?
Orders are delivered within 3–5 business days.
